What is the role of the executive coach?

The role of the executive coach is to accelerate a leader's development so they can meet the current and emerging demands of their role and organization. This involves being both a supportive ally and a candid challenger.

  • Key aspects of the role:

    • Mirror: Reflecting back how the leader is perceived and how their behavior affects others.

    • Guide: Offering frameworks and tools for managing people, decisions, and complexity more effectively.

    • Accountability partner: Holding the leader to the commitments they make to themselves and their organization.

  • Executive coaches do not:

    • Take over line management responsibilities or make decisions for the leader.

    • Replace performance management or HR processes inside the organization.

In Kindred Consulting Group's work:

  • The executive coach role is integrated with an understanding of the broader system - strategy, structure, and culture - in which the leader operates.

  • This systemic view makes coaching more relevant and effective, because it addresses both the leader and their context.
