What is a reasonable consulting rate?

A "reasonable" consulting rate is one where the value created significantly exceeds the fee, and the structure is transparent and sustainable for both sides. For most small and mid-sized businesses, reasonable rates often sit in the $150–$350/hour band, increasing as you add deep specialization or C-suite-level advisory experience.

  • To decide if a rate is reasonable for your situation, test it against three lenses:

    • Market: Does it fall within typical ranges for consultants with similar background, niche, and track record?

    • Value: Can you see a credible path to at least a 3–5x return from the work when implemented?

    • Fit: Does the structure (hourly, project, retainer) match how you want to engage and make decisions?

  • Warning signs that a "low" rate may not actually be reasonable:

    • Vague scope or deliverables that could lead to scope creep or endless billing.

    • Limited experience with organizations at your scale or stage, increasing the risk of generic advice.

    • Lack of a clear framework or methodology, making results dependent on ad hoc conversations.

At Kindred Consulting Group:

  • Rates reflect PhD-level expertise in industrial-organizational psychology, executive experience, and a tested methodology, rather than generic hourly support.

  • Every engagement is anchored in the Kindred Clarity Framework so your investment is aimed at the most important constraints in your business - not scattered across disconnected initiatives.
